The Way

Don't want to follow but I'm too green to lead;
Struggling on the path that is laid before me.
Impatient running to the end at full speed,
Looking for answers but I'm too blind to see.
Missing the lesson while failing to take heed,
Death is the only end life can guarantee.
As I go the road unfolds; I set the pace.
To pass the test: the journey I must embrace.

The Pits

Follow that sinking feeling
Deep into the pits
To the hole where hellfire burns
To where hope does not exist.

To a place where sadness prevails
Where there are no helping hands
Only claws to tear your Soul up
Where the self-pitying are doomed to land.

Is Struggle where you'd like to be?
In Hell would you like to stay?
What if it didn't have to be?
What if there was another way?

Follow that uplifting feeling
Limitless into the sky
It's much easier to fall
But bliss is worth the climb.

To a place where Love prevails
Where Paradise is at hand
Where Gratitude lifts up your Soul
Leading you to the promised land.

Fight that sinking feeling
On your Heart don't let it weigh
It's a battle for the unseasoned
But it is the Peaceful way.

False Castle

What happens when your foundation is built on quicksand?
When the choices of your forebears lead you into the ground?
When a lifetime of struggling shows no sign of advancement?
When you feel like there is no way out?

You can build a false castle
Grabbing at whatever matter is at hand
Manipulating debris to prop you up
Hoping it will pile up faster than it will sink
Fragile, needy and unstable
It will hold up with constant attention
But there will be no rest or peace housed here.

It is a house of appearance
A reverse fun house mirror
You can fool admirers, so long as they don't linger
Delude them with charm
Torment them with envy
Seduce them with love
And when they ask what lies in the dungeon,
Announce that the party is over and it's time to go.

You know what you've buried beneath
The truth that you've failed at hiding from yourself;
That your fortress is plunging;
By confining yourself within its walls
You will go down with it.

In your mind you decide
That this is all there is
It is what's been handed down
A legacy of lemons leads you to choose between
A life of swallowing bitter lemonade
Or choosing nothing and letting life swallow you.

But if you took a minute to look outside of yourself
Into a world of vast opportunities
You'd realize that you don't have to live there
You don't have to sink
Or waste anymore of your energy maintaining a false facade.

Why should it matter if people find out you're flawed?
You will find there are people who are empathetic and kind.

Why should it matter if you failed in holding up the existing structure?
Continuing on with fruitless endeavors will never be an accomplishment.

Why should it matter if you couldn't keep what was given to you?
If someone gives you a handful of broken glass, would you grip it tighter?

Why should it matter that you fear stepping outside of all you've ever known?
Fear of the unknown allows for more hope than the fear of imminent doom.

Let go of the sentimentality of time--
You will find that your present and future are more malleable than the past.
Let go of your ego--
You will find the road to well-earned pride is clearer if you stopped getting in your way.
Let go of your greed--
You will find that what you are is more than enough.
Let go of yourself--
You will find that the one you've been isn't the one you have to be.

You can walk outside
Head toward stable ground and look back
Long enough to see how quickly weak support systems fall without your attention
To watch the wreckage of your unreliable fortress sink into the sand
Swallowed into depths where they are no longer your burden.

You will be left with nothing but yourself
You'll find the energy to build what it was that you were pretending to have
On a solid base, with the safety and comfort one finds with knowledge that it will hold effortlessly
Motivated by the momentum forward, outward and upward
Instead of the frantic panic of trying to keep a decrepit existence afloat.

So what happens when your foundation is built on quicksand?
Let it sink.
When the choices of your forebears lead you into the ground?
Leave those in the past and choose a new future.
When a lifetime of struggling shows no advancement?
Find something worth fighting for.
When you feel like there is no way out?
Stop shorting yourself, because there is always a way.

Dreamscape

Ghostly glimmer
Hidden in clouds
Eyes to the sky
Squinting to find

A sliver
A shimmer
A glint
A glimpse

Formless phantom
Cumulonimbus
Shifting, evading
Misty fading

Divine dance
Ethereal embrace
Spectral vision
Timeless pace

Ghostly glimmer
Hidden in clouds
Intangible dreamspace
Feet on the ground.

Eternal

Water, ever-changing,
Simultaneous
Nourishing and treacherous
Flexible and unbiased
Constant iterations
Infinite variations
But the essence remains...
Eternal.

"Come for a swim,
I'll let you in
Wrap you in cool
Open your eyes
I can show you darkness
Unfold the depths
Float you through time and space,
For I am...
Eternal."

Free fall
Free flow
Dive deep and look up
Outer world
Brilliant and light,
Refracted
Reflected
Distorted through a liquid lens.
Anchored to your breath.

"Come swim in me,
I'll show you my world.
Dip a toe
Blindly leap
Come and go as you please
I'll let you in
I'm always here
In one form or another
For I am...
Eternal."

Love's Evolution, Part 2

What does eight years look like?

Secure.
The sun rises and the sun sets.
Room for you in a warm bed.
A hand to hold,
A safe place for your heart to rest.

Memory.
Someone to see how far you've come;
To remind you when you forget.
An extension of your mind,
Purger of regret.

Growth.
Steadfast and solid but without restraint;
Soul-reaching roots to keep from getting carried away.
Branches free to reach for the sky,to be nourished by the sun, moon and stars.
Stretching, climbing, pushing you to go far.

Hope.
The future in a chubby, little face.
Comfort brought from an embrace.
Love reconfirmed with every kiss.
There's always hope when love is the basis.

So what does eight years look like?
I cannot finitely say.
Today holds only a semblance of yesterday.
Expansion and contraction, an infinite, ever-changing dream.
Eight years is defined when I look at you and you look at me.

Love Submerged

Betwixt the two we swim to love
as rivers swim to sea.

The currents guide us to and fro
and into trenches deep.

I am pulled into the dark
I know not what lies beneath

But with you, at my side
Underwater, I can breathe.

Head in the Clouds

Many stars alight
Jasmine pinpoints in the sky
Wishes soaring by.

A Poem for the Dr.

The Dr. helped us learn to read,
by writing stories silly-ly.
A fox, a cat, and even fish
spoke to us in gibberish.

The most important lesson taught:
Use your brain, lest it rot.
Cultivate creativeness,
even if it makes a mess.

A cat will help you clean it up.
and when you're done you'll Hop on Pop.
Your tongue will twist with Fox in Socks,
(I like to read this in a box).

Outside the box is just as fun,
can't find a rhyme? Make one up!
How else will a Yink, a Zed and Zans,
come over for green eggs and ham?

As we've grown, we've lost our way
focusing on rainy days.
On bills and jobs and things that suck.
The Dr. warned about the slump.

The Dr.'s written good advice,
not just for kids, for practical life.
"Life's a Great Balancing Act.
Just never forget to be dexterous and deft."

From Bang-Ups and Hang-Ups we are not immune,
and "un-slumping" ourselves is hard to do.
Bad things will happen to you and to me,
if we keep sharp we will succeed.

(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed).

Do as you please, don't be afraid--
live as if all you have is today.
But you don't just have today--
you'll most likely have tomorrow
So don't be scared of trial and error.

Happy birthday Dr.,
today is your day.
I hope you're in a bright place
where the Boom Bands play.
